The building known as Whitegates was constructed to house military families of Alderney’s Victorian garrison. During the twentieth century it was turned over to civilian use. Deemed beyond economic repair in 2025 it was pulled down and the site cleared. Archaeological investigations took place in May 2026 to precede redevelopment of the site as social housing. Extensive prehistoric occupation was revealed. Post-excavation work on this site is still ongoing.
